I am a firm believer that if you score one goal the other team have to score two to win (Howard Wilkinson)

I would like to share with you my first experience of making a football shirt cake. It took me about 100 hours (or even 5) but I think it's fair to say that it came out looking pretty reasonable. I even have an order for a Tottenham cake next. Hopefully it won't take me quite as long.

Essential bits needed

- Cake. It needs to be baked in slabs so that you can make the shape.

- Logos printed on icing paper. I buy mine from a lovely lady called Julie Kirk at Photocake Occasions (www.photocake-occasion.co.uk). I think I will need to invest in my own equipment soon though because I spend so much money on these things.

- Sugarpaste icing in different colours or specialist food colouring. I actually used a mixture of both but I would always recommend buying as many ready-done things as possible. It saves so much time!

- Cake board/box etc

OK I'm bored of that bit, if you have any other specific questions please ask & I will divulge all. I actually have loads of equipment and bits & stuff but I'm getting fed up of writing :)

Making a Football Shirt Cake

Step 1 - Cut the cake to size. When making shapes out of cakes, it's best to work with cake slabs as it where and cut out what you need.

Step 2 - assemble all the pieces, sandwich the layers together with jam & buttercream & then coat with a thin layer of buttercream.

Step 3 - Cover with two layers of sugarpaste icing. I did two layers because I didn't think one was going to give the most professional look. I think you can see what I mean when you see how the cake looks after one layer.

Layer 1

After the second layer - a bit tidier I think...
Step 4 - Add the logo and finishing touches.

Notice the picture of the shirt there to make sure I got it right :)

Step 5 - Cover the board (oh and add the detail on the sleeve!)

I used a mix of different coloured icing and some colouring to get the football pitch thing going here.

Et voila!

So that is it folks. Of course I have tried to condense the detail but I hope you get the gist. Any questions just give me a shout.

When life gives you a lemon, find someone who has vodka and throw a party (Ivan Minic)

Until I started baking, I was only really into Chocolate Cakes. However since reluctantly adding a touch of freshly grated lemon zest to my vanilla cake mix, I have fallen in love with all things lemony.

I wanted to make a cupcake version of the Lemon Meringue Pie. There are loads of recipes out there but it's just as easy to make it up as you go along.

Today's offering is my attempt at such a delight. The cake is vanilla with a lemon curd filling, topped with Mascarpone Cream Icing (my old favourite) and a small but perfectly formed meringue.  - delicious...

Mascarpone cream icing, my absolute favourite!

Bienvenue!

Welcome all to my blog Mairrn! Today is the first of many where I will document my journey and hopefully my progress. I've been baking on a more serious level since 2007 doing family weddings and parties. This year I've decided to take it seriously and get good! Websites are costly and time consuming to set up but not so with blogs. The more I looked around though, I realised that a great blog is about great pictures and food styling, skills I haven't yet acquired. Oh well, I will try my best and I hope you enjoy it anyway, please leave comments and get in touch. My email is BaileyAnaCakes@aol.com
