Cupcakes in Bloom

Happy Mothers Day! I had a beautiful day today with my two boys on what felt like the coldest day EVER! They made me lovely cupcakes and we took a trip down to the Sunday flower market at Columbia Road.

Now that I'm officially a Londoner again, and an East Londoner at that, I'm lucky enough to have that market on my doorstep. It's all it's cracked up to be and more although it's without doubt the busiest market I've ever been to!

Whilst I was keeping hypothermia at bay in these near arctic conditions, my own mum was sunning it up in Jamaica (lucky for some!)

In honour of all mothers everywhere, I made some blossom cupcakes, as inspired by Cup Cakes in Bloom in one of my many Peggy Porschen books. I'm thinking I'm going to do more of her cakes. I've got a few favourites that I'm really excited to try so keep an eye out!

Not everyone has their mother around or is fortunate enough to have the kind of relationship with their biological mother that I do, and for some it's a painful reminder that they do not have any children of their own. It's a bit like Valentines Day and Christmas; holidays that are meant to about love and family (and are), but that can also have a sad edge.

As for me, I'm grateful to have so many blessings in my life and to be surrounded by so much love and I hope to never take it for granted.

Peggy Porschen (Tea & Cake London)

Peggy Porschen is one of my cake heros. I currently have two of her books and I love her style. Last year, I made my way down to her boutique in Victoria and bought about 5 cupcakes (it was the right thing to do!)

What can I say other than the woman is a baking goddess and one day I too will have a fancy boutique that people will flock to from far and wide to come and gorge themselves on the delights therein...? A girl can dream :)

Snow & Chocolate Teaspoon Biscuits

Kindness is like snow, it beautifies everything it covers. 

Let it snow! 

After a mild spell of weather, winter made her presence felt with a week of snow fall.  I must say that we don't do 'snow' very well here: from the time we know that it's coming, we start  planning to stop work and play in the snow!

The snow had barely settled & I was already trying to make snow angels!

There's something magical about snow. You go to bed with the world looking one way & wake up to find it transformed and full of possibilities. As a general rule, people are friendlier, children come out on the street to play and sometimes if you're lucky, you don't have to go to work!

This week was cool because I had my very first set of visitors in my new home (well ones that stayed over anyway!) Maarten and Liz from Belgium came to re-live our festival days at the Worldwide Festival Awards show at Koko in Camden. We had a lovely weekend but to be honest it was too cold to do any sightseeing with them. As wonderful as snow is, after a few minutes you just want to get inside and get warm already!

I did manage to squeeze some baking into my chilled (get it!) weekend and made chocolate biscuits while the guys were finishing up their Sunday lunch. We nibbled on them while we listened to good music and watched classic movies. Yay for lazy weekends and good company!
